House Energy and Commerce Innovation, Data, and Commerce Subcommittee Chair Gus Bilirakis recently delivered opening remarks at a subcommittee hearing focused on "Legislative Solutions to Protect Kids Online and Ensure Americans’ Data Privacy Rights." Bilirakis highlighted the importance of new Subcommittee members and the need for a federal data privacy and security law.

Bilirakis emphasized the significance of establishing a comprehensive privacy and data security standard through the American Privacy Rights Act, stating, "This bipartisan work has culminated with this discussion draft, which gives Americans the right to control their personal information." He stressed the importance of creating a national standard to provide consistent rights and protections for consumers and businesses across state lines.

In addition to the American Privacy Rights Act, Bilirakis discussed proposals for age verification on websites, streamlining terms of service labeling, and enhancing online safety measures for children. He acknowledged the efforts of Rep. Walberg and Rep. Castor in advancing kids' privacy and online safety legislation, emphasizing the need to hold Big Tech accountable for the negative impact on children's mental health.

During the hearing, Bilirakis welcomed witnesses Ava Smithing from the Young People’s Alliance and Kara Frederick, a former team lead for Facebook, to share their insights and experiences related to online harms and social media platforms. He expressed gratitude towards Chair Rodgers for her bipartisan proposal and urged collaboration to pass critical safety measures for all Americans, especially children.

In conclusion, Bilirakis reiterated his commitment to working towards a safer online environment, stating, "Let’s get this done together for the sake of all Americans, and especially our kids."
