Today, Congressman Brett Guthrie, Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, commented on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) recent actions to address duplicative enrollments. CMS plans to remove 2.8 million enrollees who are registered in two or more Medicaid and/or ACA exchange plans.
Guthrie expressed support for the decision, stating, “I applaud President Trump for taking decisive action to remove 2.8 million duplicative enrollees from State Medicaid programs and ACA exchanges, a move that will uphold the integrity of these programs by rooting out corrosive waste, fraud, and abuse.” He also noted that this effort builds on work by House Republicans in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), which provides tools to CMS and states to prevent such wasteful spending.
According to CMS’s analysis of 2024 enrollment data, 2.8 million Americans were found enrolled in Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) across multiple states or simultaneously in both Medicaid/CHIP and a subsidized Affordable Care Act (ACA) Exchange plan. Addressing these duplications could save taxpayers around $14 billion annually.
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act has equipped CMS with new tools to prevent future occurrences where the federal government pays twice for an individual’s care, potentially saving billions and restoring system integrity.
