Today, Congressman Morgan Griffith (VA-09), who chairs the Subcommittee on Health, conducted a hearing focused on legislative proposals aimed at maintaining and improving the public health workforce, rural health, and over-the-counter medicines.
“Today’s legislative hearing is necessary to continue essential programs that are vital to our health care infrastructure. Many of the bills before us expire at the end of this fiscal year and must be reauthorized,” said Chairman Griffith. “Considering each of these reauthorizations is an important step forward to ensure each program is working as intended.”
Chairman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) highlighted concerns about a projected shortage of over 170,000 physicians in the next decade. He emphasized the importance of Title VII and Title VIII programs designed to boost participation in the healthcare workforce. Dr. Candice Chen responded by stressing the need for reauthorization of these impactful programs, which support training in areas of need.
Congressman Bob Latta (OH-05) discussed his role in modernizing FDA regulations for OTC medicines through the OMUFA program five years ago. He expressed pride in leading its reauthorization due to its efficiency improvements and reduced healthcare system burdens.
Congressman Michael Rulli (OH-06) expressed his support as an original co-sponsor for H.R. 2493, a bipartisan bill aimed at extending grants to aid rural residents with healthcare access challenges. He noted it was refreshing to see bipartisan support for such initiatives.
