Evacuation notices issued across Okanogan County as firefighters work to contain Palmer wildfire

Firefighters are making progress in containing the Palmer wildfire that has destroyed 30 structures and 13,000 acres of land in Okanogan County, according to KING5 News.

The fire started burning at around  2:51 p.m. on Aug. 18  and has since grown to 18,077 acres as it sweeps across Okanogan County.

Strong winds on Friday, Aug. 21 prevented firefighters from making large gains in containing the fire, but according to an incident management team, firefighters made significant progress containing the fire on Sunday, Aug. 23 and as of Monday, Aug. 24.the fire has been 27% contained.

A Level 2 evacuation notice has also been issued to the town of Loomis, which means residents should be prepared to leave at a moment's notice. Fire officials said the flames breached dozer lines north of the town. Level 2 evacuations are also in place for the area extending 1.5 miles east of Wannacut Lake Road from Ellis Barnes Road in the north and south to Richards Road, KING5 News reported. 

Level 3 evacuation notices, which means residents need to evacuate at once, have been issued to residents along the Loomis-Oroville Road from Chopaka Road to Toats Coulee Road. Residents in the area west of Wannacut Lake, including Wannacut Lake Road from Ellis Barnes Road in the north, south to Richards Road, are also under Level 3 evacuations.

Level 2 and 3 evacuations have been issued for areas west of Wannacut Lake in Okanogan County, KING5 News reported. 

Wannacut Lake Road at Ellemeham Mountain Road, Ellis Barns Road at Loomis-Oroville Road, Blue Lake Road at Lake Front Road and Washburn Lake Road at the Loomis – Oroville Road have been closed.
