A child care center in Pullman has been awarded a $62,775 grant to support expanding its capacity.

Community Child Care Center is one of the child care communities receiving an award from the Washington State Department of Commerce, Big County News reported in late-December. The department awarded a total of $1.8 million to 24 organizations.

"This pandemic has impacted individuals and businesses in very different ways, among them a concerning trend in women leaving the workforce due to extraordinary demands on families to teach and care for children at home," Commerce Director Lisa Brown told Big County News.

This is the second round of grants the department has awarded to organizations in the state.

"A robust and equitable economic recovery depends on families having access to affordable, quality child care," Brown said, Big County News reported.

Brown said one in five parents had to turn down a job offer or promotion because they had no one to watch their children.
