Washington, D.C. – Eastern Washington Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA-05) and Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) today introduced a bipartisan, bicameral resolution to designate April as the Month of the Military Child.

“Joining the military is more than just a job, it’s a family commitment that can be difficult,” said Rodgers. “To all the children whose mom or dad is actively serving our country – at Fairchild Air Force Base or halfway around the world – we thank you for sharing in their sacrifice. You are a hero in your own way, and you deserve to be celebrated.”

Specifically, the resolution urges all citizens, business, and government leaders to observe the Month of the Military Child with ceremonies and activities that honor, support, and show appreciation for the incredible sacrifices of the more than 1.6 million children connected to the military across the United States.

“When a servicemember joins the military, it’s a family commitment—this resolution is about recognizing the sacrifice those children also make in service to our country,” said Murray. “I’m proud to be a voice for Washington state’s servicemembers and veterans—and I will always work to ensure we are supporting our military and veteran families every way that we can.”

Supporting military families has always been a top priority for Cathy. As co-chair of the Congressional Military Family Caucus, she introduced the Military Family Nutrition Access Act and the Military Food Security Act to rethink the way we provide a safety net and temporary assistance to servicemembers in their time of need. Cathy also secured a pay raise for troops at Fairchild Air Force Base last Congress in the FY23 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

The lawmakers were joined in introducing this resolution by Representatives Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) and Andy Kim (NJ-03), as well as Senator John Boozman (R-AR).
