House Energy and Commerce Communications and Technology Subcommittee Chair Bob Latta (R-OH) spoke passionately at a subcommittee legislative hearing about the urgent need to protect communication networks from foreign adversaries, particularly China. Latta emphasized the threat posed by China, stating, “Every minute, China is attempting to infiltrate communication networks across the globe in its quest for global economic dominance.”
Latta highlighted the bipartisan efforts of the Committee in passing laws such as the Secure and Trusted Communications Networks Act and the Secure Equipment Act to safeguard domestic communications networks. He stressed the importance of combating foreign influence in order to secure national security interests.
The subcommittee discussed new legislative proposals aimed at promoting U.S. innovation and countering Chinese tech influence. Latta mentioned several bills under consideration, including H.R. 2864, which focuses on adding DJI Technologies to the FCC's covered list, and H.R. 820, the Foreign Adversary Communications Transparency Act, which aims to increase transparency regarding entities with licenses owned by adversarial countries.
Additionally, the subcommittee reviewed the FUTURE Networks Act and other discussion drafts that address the risks posed by certain technologies and aim to enhance the resiliency of communication networks, particularly in regions like Taiwan that face threats from foreign adversaries.
Latta commended the bipartisan collaboration within the committee, stating, “I’m proud this committee continues its important bipartisan work to lead on solutions that protect Americans and safeguard our communications networks.” The ongoing efforts underscore the evolving threats faced by communication networks and the necessity for constant vigilance to address these challenges effectively.
