House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers and Subcommittee on Communications and Technology Chair Bob Latta have issued a statement following reports that TikTok executives are aware of the platform's potential harm to children.
The statement highlights, "Reporting confirms that TikTok executives know what Congress has known for years: TikTok is a threat to our children’s well-being and our national security by design." The Chairs expressed concern over the platform's addictive nature and its ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
To address these issues, the Energy and Commerce Committee has enacted the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, now law in the United States. This legislation requires TikTok to choose between separating from its parent company ByteDance or facing consequences if it remains connected with the CCP.
The statement concluded, "The days of TikTok further manipulating and exploiting its users are numbered."
