Subcommittee Chairman Bob Latta addressed the state of America's energy system in a recent hearing titled "Powering America’s Future: Unleashing American Energy." The discussion focused on the challenges posed by current policies and the need for increased energy production to meet growing demands.
Latta emphasized, "Today, we are discussing the state of our nation’s energy system, reviewing Biden administration actions that have undermined our economic and national security, and, importantly, looking forward to how our subcommittee will meet our ever-expanding need for more energy."
The U.S. Energy Information Administration predicts record electricity consumption in 2024 and 2025. Additionally, data center load growth is expected to double or triple by 2028. This increase highlights the necessity for reliable energy sources.
Latta criticized regulations like the Clean Power Plan 2.0, which he claims could hinder essential resources. He stated that high energy prices result from federal spending and anti-fossil fuel policies under President Biden's administration.
In response to these challenges, Latta advocates for an "all-of-the-above" strategy that includes diverse energy sources such as fossil fuels, nuclear power, and renewables. He remarked on the importance of maintaining baseload power from traditional sources while integrating intermittent ones like solar and wind.
He also expressed concerns about global competition in AI development and energy leadership. "Adversarial nations actively seek to exploit our energy demand to undermine our position on the world stage," Latta said.
Highlighting past successes under former President Trump, Latta noted efforts to secure America's electric grid against threats and enhance nuclear infrastructure through legislation like the ADVANCE Act and Nuclear Fuel Security Act.
The subcommittee aims to address increasing energy demands while ensuring North American energy dominance. Latta concluded his statement by expressing optimism about future dialogues on these issues.
