January’s Prepare in a Year focus is creating a Communications Plan. Here are a few simple steps to help you get started (or improve your existing plan):

Write down emergency contact information & keep it with you. Remember to put a copy in your child’s backpack!

Have an extra cell phone charger & battery.

Designate an out-of-area emergency contact. Update them with your location & status if you cannot communicate locally.

Remember that text messages are more likely to go thru than calls.

Establish designated meeting locations near the home (such as the corner telephone pole) as well as outside the immediate area (like a neighborhood park).

If possible, use social media to update family and friends.
