EcoHealth Alliance (EcoHealth) President Dr. Peter Daszak is set to appear for a public hearing on May 1, 2024, before the House Energy and Commerce Committee (E&C) amidst allegations of misleading testimony and discrepancies in his statements.

The Chairs of various committees have raised concerns about Dr. Daszak's credibility following inconsistencies between his closed-door transcribed interview and evidence reviewed by the Committees. They are calling on him to address these discrepancies and explain EcoHealth's relationship with the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), which received funding from the organization for gain-of-function research.

In a letter to Dr. Daszak, the Chairs expressed the need for him to correct the record, stating, "These revelations undermine your credibility as well as every factual assertion you made during your transcribed interview... We invite you to correct the record."

The Committees are also seeking further information from Dr. Daszak regarding EcoHealth's communication with the WIV, public health agencies, and individuals involved in the lab-leak hypothesis suppression. The background of the issue includes revelations that EcoHealth intended to conduct risky research at the WIV, contradicting earlier statements made by Dr. Daszak to the Committees.

According to recently released documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, EcoHealth's plans to conduct gain-of-function research at a University of North Carolina lab, if approved by DARPA, were contradicted by evidence suggesting the organization aimed to mislead DARPA and conduct the research at the WIV instead.

The Chairs emphasized the importance of correcting and clarifying Dr. Daszak's statements, particularly in light of the biosafety concerns and compliance issues raised by EcoHealth's approach to research, along with the potential implications for the COVID-19 pandemic's origins.

Scientific evidence and available intelligence suggest that a research-related incident at a lab in Wuhan could have contributed to the pandemic, further underscoring the significance of addressing the concerns raised about EcoHealth's activities and Dr. Daszak's testimony.

The public hearing on May 1 will provide Dr. Daszak with an opportunity to address these issues and provide clarity on EcoHealth's involvement with the WIV and the implications of its research activities.
