Today, the House Committee on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Environment convened a hearing titled "Maximizing Opportunities for Redeveloping Brownfields Sites: Assessing the Potential for New American Innovation." The focus was on leveraging brownfield sites—areas previously used for industrial purposes that may be contaminated—for new development opportunities.

Chairman Griffith emphasized the importance of the Brownfields Program in supporting communities affected by past industrial activities. He stated, “The Brownfields Program supports communities impacted by prior industrial activity, offering them a new opportunity to spur growth and innovation. As the program continues to work to clean up areas that have been contaminated, we can leverage these sites to construct, among other things, data centers critical to advancing Artificial Intelligence.”

Representative Bob Latta (OH-05) addressed permitting processes during the hearing. He asked about improvements needed in this area to expedite projects. Hon. James L. Connaughton responded by suggesting changes in default permitting practices could help accelerate development without compromising environmental standards.

Representative John Joyce (PA-13) highlighted Pennsylvania's reliance on industries such as coal and steel and noted how many of these legacy industries have left behind land requiring cleanup. He praised the EPA's Brownfields Program for facilitating economic redevelopment in areas like Cambria and Blair counties.

Representative August Pfluger (TX-11) expressed concerns about rural districts being overlooked in favor of urban projects. Mr. Duane Miller advocated for recruiting data centers to rural areas through brownfield funding, describing rural regions as "a blank canvas."
