Today, Congressman Brett Guthrie, Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, commented on the confirmation of Dr. Jayanta Bhattacharya as Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) by the U.S. Senate.

Guthrie highlighted the importance of biomedical research in addressing chronic diseases and the ongoing illicit drug crisis in America. He stated that Americans deserve research "backed by reliable, transparent data" to treat and prevent illness. Guthrie emphasized that while NIH has historically been instrumental in developing advanced treatments, it requires a new direction after years without sufficient accountability to Congress and the public.

He expressed confidence in Dr. Bhattacharya's leadership, stating, "Dr. Bhattacharya is the right man for the job," and looked forward to collaborating with him to restore trust in NIH's mission to support Americans' health.
