Congressman Gus Bilirakis, who chairs the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade, opened a hearing titled "The World Wild Web: Examining Harms Online" in Washington, D.C. The focus was on the dangers Americans face online.

Bilirakis emphasized the importance of addressing online safety early in the congressional session. He acknowledged technology's benefits but noted its misuse by malicious actors to harm people globally. He pointed out that while Congress has attempted to prevent these harms, it struggles to keep up with technological advancements.

He highlighted Congress's past efforts against child sexual exploitation and how unforeseen developments like artificial intelligence have enabled the creation of fake yet realistic non-consensual images of children. "Detestable people are extorting children with technology," he said.

Yiota from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children was thanked for her expertise. Bilirakis expressed eagerness to advance the Kids Online Safety Act, aiming to provide parents with tools to protect their children from illegal content.

He criticized Big Tech for inadequate solutions regarding children's online safety and appreciated Dawn and Clare for sharing their experiences and commitment to change.

Bilirakis stressed that this issue transcends partisan politics as it affects every district. He referenced McKenna Brown's tragic suicide due to cyberbullying as an example of why legislative action is crucial. McKenna’s mother Cheryl advocates for giving parents necessary tools for protection.

Bilirakis acknowledged similar stories among attendees and hoped bipartisan cooperation would lead to improved protections for children online. He concluded by thanking witnesses for their contributions before yielding to Ms. Schakowsky, the subcommittee's ranking member.
