Today, Congressman Brett Guthrie, Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, Congressman Gus Bilirakis, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade, and Congressman Richard Hudson, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology, responded to President Trump's decision to delay the enforcement of the TikTok divestiture requirement. This decision was made given progress towards a deal concerning the popular social media application.
Chairmen Guthrie, Bilirakis, and Hudson stated, “We are glad to hear about significant progress towards separating TikTok from entities connected to the Chinese Communist Party. While there are remaining details that must be worked out, any deal must finally end China’s ability to surveil and potentially manipulate the American people through this app.” They further emphasized, “Our Committee will remain vigilant in protecting our national security and standing up for American interests across the board.”
This development comes as discussions continue to address concerns regarding TikTok's relationship with entities associated with the Chinese government. The enforcement of a required divestiture has been put on hold as parties involved work towards resolving outstanding issues.
